Why we exist

Travel is not about seeing more places. It is about seeing one place properly.

Most Jaipur itineraries are a race. Six sights before lunch, a scripted commentary, and two unscheduled stops at shops that pay for the privilege of your attention. You leave having photographed a city you never actually met.

Greywave was built the other way round. We run a small number of journeys, slowly, in a single region we know by heart. Our guides are trained heritage historians on a flat professional salary paid by us — never by a shop, never by a hotel, never by a commission. What they tell you is what they believe.

We are made for travellers who would rather understand one courtyard than photograph twenty.

Amer before the gates open

The ramp up to Amer is empty for exactly forty minutes a day. We take it on foot while the mist is still sitting in the Maota, reach the Sheesh Mahal before the first coach arrives, and let you stand in it alone. Chai on the ramparts as Jaipur switches its lights off.

Jaipur is a functioning city before it is a monument. Mid morning is when the bazaars open, the block printers start their first run and the havelis are still cool. A full day that connects the palaces to the people who keep them standing.

Sandstone, at the temperature it was cut for

Nahargarh sits seven hundred feet above the walled city, and for roughly ninety minutes each evening the whole of it turns the colour it was quarried. We position you on the western wall well before the crowd finds it, with the Jal Mahal on the drive back.

When the fort empties and the city lights up

Everyone leaves at sunset. That is the mistake. Stay twenty minutes longer and the Pink City comes on beneath you one grid at a time while a sarangi player sets up on the terrace behind you. Add a private folk recital or a haveli dinner to any evening route.

Three forts, one afternoon apart

Amer

Hilltop palace · begun 1592

Most visitors see four courtyards and leave. We take the corridors behind them — the servants' passages, the winter apartments, the mirror work in the Sheesh Mahal read as engineering rather than decoration. Our historians are licensed to interpret the architecture, and they will tell you which restorations are honest and which are not.

Jaigarh

Aravalli ridge · the arsenal

The fort that was never taken. Jaigarh held the foundry that armed the whole kingdom, and still holds Jaivana — for two centuries the largest wheeled cannon on earth. Underneath it runs the subterranean passage down to Amer, built so the treasury could move without ever surfacing. We walk you through both.

Nahargarh

700 feet above the walled city

The retreat rather than the stronghold. Nine identical apartments built for nine queens, arranged so that none could tell which the Maharaja had chosen. Come at the end of the day, when the sandstone turns amber and the entire grid of the Pink City lays itself out below you.
